Matchday Programme

As we had to complete all our fixtures by 20 April and there was a Youth fixture scheduled for the Avondale Motor Park Arena, our home game against Trefelin was moved to the Gentles Construction Stadium, the home of Taffs Well FC and we thank them for hosting the fixture.

Although the was nothing on the game but pride for both teams, the game started at a good pace with the players showing excellent commitment and a will to try to win the game. Celtic drew first blood in the very first minute in unfortunate circumstances from Trefelin’s point of view, when their full back, Tom Krauze failed to find his ‘keeper with a back pass with the ball finding the back of the net instead!

However, this lead was short lived and in the second minute Celtic failed to clear a ball into the penalty area and gave Roan Piper the opportunity to guide the ball past Hooper to even things up. However, Celtic continued to threaten and on 21 minutes Alex Bonthron was played through by Tom Meechen and he placed a left shot wide of Jones to restore their lead.

Both sides then had chances to score but it was Celtic who increased their lead in the 37th minute. A corner from the left cleared everyone and landed at the feet of Adrian Maguire who promptly returned it into the penalty area where Lewis Isles got to it before Jones to head into the empty net.

With Alex Bonthron needing to score another three goals to overtake Briton Ferry’s Luke Bowen at the top of the goalscorer’s chart for the Cymru (South) League, Celtic’s supporters were rooting for him and he was unlucky when a goal bound shot hit Tom Meechan and then a through ball from Tom unfortunately struck the back of Alex’s heel when he would have had a clear run to goal.

HALF TIME: Celtic 3 Trefelin 1

the second half became a story of further missed chances for Alex. He placed a close range header wide of the near post, failed to connect with a low cross to the far post. It looked like he was perhaps trying too hard to get the goals he needed!

Trefelin huffed and puffed and had a good deal of the ball but their strikers were misfiring and they never really troubled Hooper.

Just when it looked like the game would drift to the final whistle, Alex got his second goal when, yet again, Tom Meechan found him with a through ball which he calmly placed beyond Jones. This now leaves him one goal behind Bowen going into Saturday’s game against Goytre United. His goal provider-in-chief, Tom Meechan, is way ahead in the race to become the player with the highest assists in the League with nineteen for the season, was ahead of Briton Ferry’s Tom Walters, who has twelve.
