Match Report
Cwmbran Celtic have a reputation as the Welsh/Cymru league’s perennial relegation escapologists so, having been deeply immersed in a relegation scrap in 6 of our 10 seasons in tier 2, it was pleasing to have secured our place for another season with 3 games to play. Who will ever forget the last gasp goal by Andrew Hewitt last season which kept our boys up at the expense of Risca.
The goalless draw on Good Friday was a drab affair. In the 1st half Tom Meechan brought a fine diving by Luke Martin and Celtic were indebted to a brilliant parry by Watkins to deny Johnston’s point blank header. In the 2nd half the best chances fell to Swansea. A desperate full-length toe poke by Roberts from Morgan’s cross went agonisingly wide of the empty goal. Watkins again saved Celtic blocking Huddart’s shot with Morgan screwing the rebound wide. Then Orme’s 83rd minute ‘goal’ was ruled offside. Celtic could have snatched the 3 points themselves in time added on. Meechan’s cross-shot was beaten away by Martin but the ball fell awkwardly to Jordan Meaney whose shot went wide of the empty net.
The University remain unbeaten in 6 games against Celtic since their 1st meeting in 2019.
