Match Report
We completed a festive double over local rivals Abergavenny Town FC following a dramatic conclusion to the JD Cymru South derby at the Avondale Motor Park Arena. Just when it appeared that the teams would have to settle for a share of the spoils, we netted a winning goal in stoppage time, having won the reverse fixture 3-0 at the Pen-y-Pound Stadium last Tuesday afternoon.
Following a goalless opening 45 minutes to today’s meeting, it was the visitors that eventually broke the deadlock four minutes after the interval, when defender Drew Heffernen rose highest to plant his header past Lewis Watkins from a corner. We equalised when a Tom Meechan volley was kept out by Abergavenny Town goalkeeper Connor Christie but Lewis Iles reacted quickest to force home the rebound at the far post. Both teams went searching for a second goal, during the final quarter of the derby, but it appeared they were out of luck today. That was until substitute Lewis McCauley netted from a Meechan corner in the fourth minute of stoppage time to spark the celebrations amongst the Celtic contingent and break the Pennies’ own hearts in their battle against relegation.
