Match Report

Abergavenny Town were delighted to end a run of 5 successive defeats to pick up their first league points of the season in this keenly fought Gwent derby under the Pen-y-Pound lights but Celtic, having taken an early lead and dominating much of the 2nd half will be disappointed not to have put the game to bed before Town’s late winner.

Celtic got off to a great start. Isaac Powell’s 6th minute free kick was fumbled onto the bar by much-travelled keeper Cameron Clarke and Lewis Iles pounced to prod the ball home – Celtic 1-0.

Into the 2nd half, despite having more of the game Celtic were not able to increase their lead. They were made to pay when, when, in the 80 th minute, a high ball was half cleared to the edge of the box where ex-Llantwit Major striker Paolo Marenghi half volleyed a fine goal into the corner of the net for the equaliser. In time added on substitute Alex Bonthron, still troubled by his shoulder injury, cut in on the left and brought a great save from Clarke. Town immediately broke on the counter-attack and were awarded a penalty for a foul challenge which teenager Rhys Schwank tucked away to secure the 3 points.

Both teams remain unchanged in the table – Celtic 8 th Abergavenny 15th
