Match Report
Visitors Briton Ferry Llansawel needed a win at Celtic Park to re-gain 1 st place in the Cymru South League from Cambrian & Clydach who went top on Friday night, however they were denied all 3 points by a barnstorming display from a Celtic side missing star strikers Bonthron and Meechan.
Lewis Iles missed a wonderful chance to open the scoring when his tap shot from close range was blocked on the line. Celtic took the lead on 22 minutes when, from an Isaac Powell free kick, the ball bobbled tantalisingly in the air before Josh Rippon got the final touch to head his 1st goal for the club. Ferry equalised 2 minutes later when Celtic allowed a corner to run right across the goal where Brock chased, turned and shot the ball into the net. On 27 minutes Celtic re-took the lead when, from another corner by Maguire, teenage keeper Evans spilled the ball into his own net when challenged by Andrew Hewitt. Celtic missed a great chance to increase their lead when Iles was clean through but Evans stood his ground to deny a goal.
The 2nd half was evenly contested but Ferry equalised in the 74th minute through a superbly struck shot from outside the box by Josh Jones. So in their last two home league games, Celtic have held the top 2 unbeaten sides to a draw. We don’t normally single out individual players but Isaac Powell had an exceptional game in midfield and Adrian Maguire, in his first start in 4½ years, was a bundle of energy as well as assisting both goals from corners. Praise too for referee Ieuan Lewis for 2 fine performances in Celtic’s last 2 games.
