Cwmbran Celtic cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win at Penygarn with a majestic display
on a 4G pitch which suited their cultured passing game. They took the lead in the 20th
minutes. Jade Crofts ran onto a ball down the right from Jodie Challenger to bring a
save from keeper Stanley. The resultant corner by Katie Williams was met by a bullet
header into the net by Jade – her 12 th goal of the season. Celtic continued to
dominate the play. Lauren Boyd shot over the bar. Fiona Anthony raced down the
right to latch onto Georgia Shwartz’s pass. She cut in down the bye-line before
crossing but a defender got a foot in to concede a corner to prevent Boyd scoring a
certain goal. Next Boyd headed wide at the near post from Williams’ corner. Then
Crofts turned and rolled a lovely pass to Cerys Shipley on the right who shot high
and just wide. On the stroke of half time Celtic deservedly went two up. Jodie
Challenger played a glorious ball into the right side of the penalty box where Fiona
was unceremoniously felled by the diving Stanley. Boyd shot high to the right from
the spot giving the keeper no chance.
In the 2nd half Penybont dug in to restrict Celtic’s chances, the best of which was from
Crofts who, having tricked her way down the left by-line, floated her shot high and
wide of the far post. Keeper Amie Preston was a virtual spectator in the Celtic goal.
She endured a lengthy injury stoppage in the 1st half and only had one meaningful
shot to save – in the 70th minute – such was Celtic’s territorial dominance.
This was a 2nd successive clean sheet for the solid Celtic defence.
They go top of the league with this win in an incredibly competitive 7-team league.
